ABOUT THE BOOK:
This is the story of a life and spirit guided by animals. Born and
raised in
the High Sierras on a national forest lookout station, Brenda Peterson
developed a bond with animals that was a daily, defining influence on her
life. Beginning with her childhood fascination with Smokey Bear, Peterson
explores her deep connection with animals - from encounters with grizzlies
in
Montan's Rockies to horses in the south, Siberian huskies in New York City
and Colorado, and her work for the restoration and protection of wild wolves
in the Arizona desert, Yellowstone, and Alaska. Here, too, are intimate
stories of wild dolphines, whales, and orcas whose lives she has studied
for
the past two decades.
Build Me an Ark bridges the mysterious worlds between species where science
and spirituality meet through Peterson's passionate storytelling. With
all
its drama, disappointment, loss, and inspiration, this memoir is a love
story. Eachmoving chapter reveals a turning point in which animal bonds
have
enriched Peterson's life and lead her to a wider epiphany; as a species we
cannot live without other animals.
"Brenda Peteson, one of the most eloquent nature writers of our time, shares
her numerous experiences with our animal kin and shows us how deeply
spiritual and soulful they are, and also how to love them for who they are."
~Marc Bekoff, author of Strolling with Our Kin and editor of The Smile of
a
Dolphin: Remarkable Accounts of Animal Emotions
"Part seer, part scientist, Brenda Peterson slipstreams between worlds.
Only
a person who as a child could sleep with a rattlesnake and as an adult swim
with wild dolphins could bring us such a magical memoir. Build Me an
Ark
will resonate deeply with all of us who seek connection with the wildness
and
wonder of the More-Than-Human world."
~ Sy Montgomery, author of Walking with the Great Apes and Journey of the
Pink Dolphins: An Amazon Quest
"Some people call themselves animal lovers, but Brenda Peterson is one, and
her life is a sweet valentine of a proof. But not, thankfully, that
sweet,
because she also adds that necessary vinegar, an accounting of our
devastating antagonism to the other species."
~ Melissa Pierson, author of Dark Horses and Black Beauties
"......It is such empathy for both humans and the natural world that sets
this remarkable author apart."
~ The Bloomsbury Review
"Whether she is discussing her wind-rattled studio on the shore of Puget
Sound or her deep relationships with marine and land animals, Peterson writes
with spiritual maturity and enviromental authority."
~ Gail Hudson, spiritual editor for amazon.com
